Robert, A group of irresponsible Tea Partiers in the House has decided their ideological agenda is more important than having a functional government. This is not the position of a majority of Democrats and Republicans, but a stubborn minority has brought us to the brink of disaster. New Hampshire families are already hurting as a result of this shutdown. Small businesses are going without crucial government loans and losing business from tourists they depend on. If this continues, it will hurt everything from education to housing. We can’t let that happen. But you may be wondering, “what is the filibuster, and where did it come from?” Here's what it is, and here's why it stinks: For a vote on a bill to take place in the Senate, a few things have to happen. A bill is brought to the Floor Senators debate the bill Senators end debate Senators vote on the bill, majority wins That’s the way the Founders intended it to go, at least.  Here’s the hitch:  In 1806, Aaron Burr — yes, the one who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel — said the Senate had too many rules and should get rid of some. One rule that got tossed in the trash can? The rule that said any senator could propose a vote that would cut off debate. Senators didn’t see a need to keep this rule on the book, so they tossed it. Robert, Exactly one year ago today, Wendy Davis took an epic, 11-hour stand before the Texas Senate, filibustering Governor Rick Perry’s extreme anti-women bill. Wendy’s stand launched a movement, pushing us all to consider the big question:  What do we stand for? One year later,  Wendy is fighting to become the first Democratic governor of Texas in decades,  and the jeers from Republican extremists have morphed into even more outlandish, sexist attacks (remember “Abortion Barbie”?).
