Protecting Communities

While liberal elites have pushed to defund the police, our poorest neighborhoods—much like the one in which I grew up—have paid the price. Take it from me: Folks in those communities don’t want to defund the police—they actually want to refund the police. Thankfully, that’s exactly what’s happening in places like Baltimore, where police budgets are increasing again after a year of violence and crime. I spoke about all of this and more during a U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs hearing .

Expanding Credit Access

This week, the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee also held a hearing on our nation’s financial system and current regulation. I spoke on an issue very important to me—credit access. Nearly 1 in 5 South Carolinians is “credit invisible,” meaning they lack credit scores because they have little or no history of traditional payments like mortgages or credit card loans. This has left them locked out of major financial options, despite the fact that many who are credit invisible are also credit worthy. My Credit Access and Inclusion Act would bridge that gap and open doors to economic opportunity for individuals across the nation.

Working for Older Americans

As the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Aging Committee, I am always working to ensure the American Dream does not stop for our older population. In pursuit of that goal, this past month, I …

  • Introduced the Golden-preneurship Act to equip older entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams;
  • Called for improved efforts to combat fraud in Medicaid’s Home and Community Based Services;
  • Wrote to President Biden, asking he reinstate Andrew Saul as Social Security Administration (SSA) commissioner, as SSA helps millions of older Americans with basic expenses;
  • And urged the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to focus on protecting older Americans throughout the upcoming flu season.

                  Robert,   We are at a moment right now. The systemic racism that runs so deeply and freely throughout this country is on full display and America is crying for a change. Countless slayings of unarmed black men, a militarized police force with no standard of accountability, a President who wants nothing more than to fuel violence and fear – America is crying for a change. Black Lives Matter. Our time is now. The New York Times just published an article on the 922 most powerful people in this country.  Of them 742 are white and 180 aren’t. I’m one of the 180 and I want to make sure you understand how important that is. I’m here because of you. Friend -- I wanted to make sure you saw the news: Today President Obama announced a common-sense policy change that will make our immigration system fairer and smarter. I'm proud to support it, and I hope you are, too. Under the administration's guidance, immigration courts are going to focus on deporting people who have been convicted of crimes or who pose a security risk. This means that the courts will focus less on "low-priority" cases -- like young people who were brought here as small children and know no other home, or veterans and military spouses. So the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice will be reviewing the current deportation caseload, clearing out low-priority cases, and making sure they don't get into the system in the first place -- keeping the focus on cases that will make our country safer. It's a smart, strategic change. And it will make a difference. But more comprehensive change requires Congress to act.

  Robert,   The left has gone completely COVID crazy.   They want government-enforced shutdowns, mask mandates, school closures, forced vaccines, and now they're talking about a COVID vaccine passport.   It's absolutely unconstitutional - not to mention, it's absurd. Credo: NBC is in bed with Trump

NBC’s unacceptable conflict of interest The petition to Comcast/NBCUniversal reads:   "Cut all business ties with Donald Trump.” Add your name: Dear robert, You cannot make this up. When "Celebrity Apprentice" returns to NBC in 2017, Donald Trump will still be executive producer of the show. This is an unprecedented moment, where  one of the largest media conglomerates in the world, Comcast/NBCUniversal, for all intents and purposes, will have a contractual arrangement with the president of the United States.  It creates a clear conflict of interest that undermines the credibility of NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC and makes it impossible to trust that any reporting on Trump has not been impacted by this business entanglement. NBC has a Trump problem that will only get worse once he is president.  To maintain any credibility as a news organization, the network needs to cut its ties now. Dear Black Independent, Many voters say “I just want someone who can win!”  I understand that, and it’s why I’m running. A politics of love is the BEST possible politics to defeat a politics of fear.  In 2016, people were angry. But that’s not the dominant emotional tenor of the American voter in 2019. Today, people are exhausted. They aren’t looking for a fight now; they’re looking for inspiration.  We need a candidate who can counter the president’s outrageously dangerous lies with outrageously exciting truths.
