Chuck: two seats

Robert,
Help Alison and Michelle win in Kentucky and Georgia
Democrats are supposed to be back on our heels this year. We're supposed to have our hands full defending crucial Senate seats in the South.
And we are working hard indeed to re-elect people like Mary Landrieu in Louisiana and Mark Pryor in Arkansas, real leaders in red states.
But we're also going on offense -- in the South.
Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes is in a strong position to defeat Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky, and Democrat Michelle Nunn will have a real chance to win an open seat in Georgia.
A victory by Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes over Mitch McConnell would help Democrats maintain control of the Senate. It would give us another great woman senator committed to creating jobs, ensuring equal pay for equal work, and ensuring a fair shot for every American.
It would also mean defeating one of the biggest advocates for more dark money in elections: McConnell actually testified on behalf of dark money before the Supreme Court in the Citizens United case.
The polls are already neck-and-neck, and thanks to the success of Obamacare and McConnell's position of absolute repeal, he's going to have to run on taking health care away from more than 400,000 people.
It's always easier for a Democrat to win a Republican seat when the incumbent retires, but in Georgia, Michelle Nunn has another crucial advantage, too: any one of the three Republicans running for the nomination could qualify as the most extreme in most other states.
Nunn has been running a great campaign so far, and whomever she faces will surely help her out by being honest about their hard-right beliefs. But winning will be a matter of turning Democratic voters out to the polls.
It's been a long time since a Democrat was favored to win a Senate seat in Georgia. To motivate voters to turn out, we have to show them the strength of the support behind Michelle Nunn.
The conventional wisdom about races in the South being key to Democrats' plans this year is true -- just not in the way most people think. If we can win one or both of these races in Kentucky and Georgia, it will be almost impossible for Republicans to take the Senate.
Thank you for your support,
Chuck Schumer
