Jason: our absurdly weak gun laws

Pride Fund to End Gun Violence
Friend,
With the nation’s 2018 midterm elections coming up, meet the candidates that Pride Fund is working around the clock to elect. These leaders stand for the core principles of Pride Fund—advancing commonsense gun reform and championing LGBTQ equality. Take a moment to get to know them and sign our thank you letter to show that you’ve got their back!

Tim Kaine: United States Senate (VA)

Tim Kaine               United States Senate (VA) Senator Tim Kaine served as the Governor of Virginia when the Virginia Tech shooting took place, making him uniquely familiar with the human cost of gun violence and the need for commonsense gun reform. In the aftermath of the shooting, Kaine worked tirelessly to close the loopholes that allowed the Virginia Tech shooter to purchase his weapon, and has fought to strengthen background checks to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons.

Tammy Baldwin: United States Senate (WI)

Tammy Baldwin                United States Senate (WI) As the nation's first openly gay Senator and a strong supporter of sensible gun reform, we know we can count on Senator Baldwin to protect our community from hate and violence. But she’s in for a tough re-election and needs our help to make sure she keeps her seat this November. Her opponents and special interests have spent over $8 million to replace her in November, which means she's facing more outside spending by Republicans than all her Democratic colleagues combined.

David Richardson: U.S. House (FL-27)

David Richardson                      U.S. House (FL-27) As the first openly gay member of the Florida Legislature, Richardson has provided a voice and a visible presence for Florida’s LGBTQ community since he was elected in 2012. He’s sponsored bills banning workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as bills honoring Pulse victims. After the Las Vegas massacre, Richardson filed a bill banning bump stocks and co-sponsored bills banning assault weapons and large capacity magazines.

Lindsey Davis Stover: U.S. House (VA-10)

Lindsey Davis Stover                        U.S. House (VA-10) Lindsey is running for Congress against Barbara Comstock in Virginia’s 10th District, one of the most winnable districts for the Democrats in the 2018 election. Lindsey has the attributes we need in a Congresswoman to help finally bring needed changes to our gun laws. She’s courageous. She’s a hard worker. She can talk to everyone and discriminates against no one. And she knows how important it is to keep guns out of the hands of violent offenders, domestic abusers, suspected terrorists, and mentally ill individuals with violent tendencies.

Harley Rouda: U.S. House (CA-48)

Harley Rouda                       U.S. House (CA-48) Harley Rouda earned our endorsement because he supports mandatory background checks for all gun purchases, restrictions on the sale and ownership of assault weapons, large-capacity magazines, and bump stocks, and empowering the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to analyze data on gun violence. As a founding member of the Human Rights Watch chapter in his district and a supporter of the Equality Act, Rouda has demonstrated his commitment to protecting the LGBTQ community from hate and discrimination.

Chris Pappas: U.S. House (NH-01)

Chris Pappas                      U.S. House (NH-01) Chris Pappas earned our endorsement because of his demonstrated steadfast commitment to the shared ideals of so many Americans: equality for all citizens, and a work ethic that values the voices of constituents over manipulation by the gun lobby. He supports gun safety measures that the majority of citizens from the Granite state favor, like universal background checks, an assault weapon and large capacity magazine ban, and a red flag law allowing family members and the justice system to intervene and prevent someone from doing harm to themselves or others.

Lauren Baer: U.S. House (FL-18)

Lauren Baer                       U.S. House (FL-18) In Congress, Lauren will make it her top priority to get assault weapons off our streets. She has pledged to vote to require universal background checks, raise the minimum purchase age to 21, keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and the mentally ill, and ban bump stocks. And she’ll take on the NRA and their dangerous plan to let out-of-state residents carry concealed weapons into our neighborhoods.

Pat Ryan: U.S. House (NY-19)

Pat Ryan                      U.S. House (NY-19) As an Iraq War veteran, Ryan is well-versed in the policy of the gun safety debate and knows that assault weapons are designed with the sole purpose of killing human beings as efficiently as possible. He’s committed to keeping weapons of war off our streets and guns out of the hands of people who should not have them.

Dr. Matt Heinz: U.S. House (AZ-02)

Dr. Matt Heinz                        U.S. House (AZ-02) Dr. Heinz has seen the reality of our country’s problem with guns. He’s treated gunshot wounds in the hospital and knows that gun safety is an issue of public health. He supports an end to the ban imposed on the CDC that prevents them from researching gun violence as a health epidemic. Dr. Heinz knows we must ban bump stocks, assault weapons, and large capacity magazines.

Rich Madaleno: Maryland Governor

Madaleno is a current Maryland State Senator, known for his ardent support of LGBTQ rights and for leading the country’s first successful passage of marriage equality by ballot in 2012. Madaleno has consistently supported life-saving legislation such as Maryland’s Firearms Safety Act of 2013, which banned assault weapons and limited the sale of large capacity magazines from 20 to 10 rounds for firearms. If elected, Madaleno would be our nation’s first openly gay governor, an important step in the fight to increase LGBTQ representation on all fronts, especially in the state’s highest office.

It’s troubling but true: Any elected official who takes on our absurdly weak gun laws gets immediate pushback from the gun lobby and some of its more extreme supporters. That’s why our candidates need to know that you’re with them. Will you sign our thank you note to show you stand with them?

With gratitude,

Jason Lindsay
