Kirsten Gillibrand: It shouldn’t take the senseless killing of innocent children to get strong gun laws in place

Our efforts to prevent gun violence just got a big boost. Today, Republican Senator Mark Kirk and I introduced a bill to fight gun trafficking.
This is the first bipartisan action since the tragic shooting in Newtown. It would define gun trafficking as a federal crime, impose stiff penalties on perpetrators and help stop the flow of illegal weapons onto our streets.
We need to pass it. Gaining Senator Kirk’s support is an enormous help, but it does not guarantee success. As you know, any proposed gun law is going to meet stiff resistance in Congress.
That’s why I need you to speak out now in support of this bill. The only way to press forward is by accepting nothing less.
It shouldn’t take the senseless killing of innocent children and teachers to get strong gun laws in place. Now that we’re here, we must do all we can to prevent something like this from happening again.
It’s up to us – all of us.

My black history was not white enough for the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.

 It's me the President of the Black Independent Party. Robert  Gilyard.  First black man to get a law degree from the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith in 2007. The first class that graduated from the college.. I am black history in Fort Smith Arkansas. But the whites at the University of Arkansas is bringing their own form of black people to represent our city and they're supposed to be representations of black folks from our city. How can I respect my Alumni when I see the same issues that were there when I was a student. These black folks don't do nothing but go to a college. Then go home. They ignore us. Ben: Candy and I first met at Yale.

robert, Candy and I celebrated our 40th Wedding Anniversary on Monday. It has been an amazing forty years. We celebrated it in Nashua, NH while we were on our New Hampshire campaign swing this week. A massive crowd of 650 gathered with us Monday night to hear our friend Tony Orlando sing some of his classic songs. The only thing larger than the crowd was the cake -- it was huge. Our whole event was covered by New Hampshire's  WMUR , and you can see their great story on it below. Candy and I first met at Yale. We are both from Detroit but Yale brought us together. We could never have predicted the course of our journey through life. I can tell you we never expected to be on the campaign trail in New Hampshire. I've spent my whole life tending to children. Which makes some state Republicans’ efforts to systematically disenfranchise minority and elderly voters unconscionable.  GOP extremists are pushing voter ID laws, purges of eligible voters and shorter polling hours. And, by overturning a key section of the Voting Rights Act, the Supreme Court made it easier for states to enact anti-voter laws. Enough.
