Robert, A group of irresponsible Tea Partiers in the House has decided their ideological agenda is more important than having a functional government. This is not the position of a majority of Democrats and Republicans, but a stubborn minority has brought us to the brink of disaster. New Hampshire families are already hurting as a result of this shutdown. Small businesses are going without crucial government loans and losing business from tourists they depend on. If this continues, it will hurt everything from education to housing. We can’t let that happen. When I was governor, I learned about the value of focusing on solutions over ideology.  We need to do the same now. We need to send the message that American families come first. Black Independent Party, When asked recently about passing H.R. 1/S. 1, the historic voting rights legislation in Congress (also known as the For The People Act), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said this: “I would say the deadline for S. 1 is …   probably by August   or so. We’re consulting with experts. When is the latest that S. 1 can undo some of the despicable and frankly racist changes that some of these Republican legislatures have made?” That’s not only a deadline for passing critical voting protections for the entire country; it’s a deadline for getting rid of the filibuster   — because we can’t pass S. 1 through the Senate without doing away with the archaic, racist filibuster. Justice Democrats has been working hard with progressive lawmakers and groups like Sunrise Movement to end the filibuster.   You’ve heard it before: It’s time we get rid of the filibuster. But you may be wondering, “what is the filibuster, and where did it come from?” Here's what it is, and here's why it stinks: For a vote on a bill to take place in the Senate, a few things have to happen. A bill is brought to the Floor Senators debate the bill Senators end debate Senators vote on the bill, majority wins That’s the way the Founders intended it to go, at least.  Here’s the hitch:  In 1806, Aaron Burr — yes, the one who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel — said the Senate had too many rules and should get rid of some. One rule that got tossed in the trash can? The rule that said any senator could propose a vote that would cut off debate. Senators didn’t see a need to keep this rule on the book, so they tossed it. Good Morning, I’ve spent the past few months traveling all across Florida. There’s one common theme I hear in every community I visit:  Protect Social Security. Republicans continue to attack Social Security. Their presidential candidates want to raise the retirement age. Their leaders in Congress set up a funding crisis for the program. They call those “reforms.” I call it breaking a promise to our seniors. Social Security turns 80 this year.
