Dana: Democrats should work on policy

Dana Balter for Congress

My Republican opponent John Katko and his party have abandoned their Constitutional responsibility for years by refusing to provide a check on Trump’s power and doing the bidding of massive corporations instead of fighting for our working families. Join me in calling on Katko and all Congressional Republicans to do the right thing, side with the people, and do their part to hold the Trump administration accountable.

Friend,

For someone who claims to be bipartisan, my Republican opponent Congressman John Katko spends a lot of time attacking Democrats. Katko recently said that Democrats don’t have an “acceptable approach to governance” because we refuse to let Trump and his enablers cover up the truth and we’re focused on fighting for issues that would benefit -- and are supported by -- the vast majority of Americans.

But it’s Katko’s own party who has been refusing to govern for years. Before we took back the House, the GOP majority in the House and the Senate betrayed their oath to the Constitution by refusing to act as a co-equal branch of government and provide oversight of Trump’s executive.

Just last week, Katko used his credibility as a former prosecutor to, at best, mislead and, at worst, lie about the Mueller report to his constituents.

Katko told us that he knows Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Mueller would have charged Trump if there had been a case. But Katko knows that no matter what evidence of wrongdoing Mueller may have found, he was bound by Department of Justice guidelines that prohibited him from charging a sitting president.

Now that Mueller’s frustrations with Attorney General William Barr’s handling of the report have been made public, it’s clear the House must use its investigative powers to learn the truth. Join me in telling Katko and all Congressional Republicans: Act with courage, support policies that put people over corporate profits, and help Democrats put a check on Trump’s power.

According to Katko, Democrats should work on policy instead of holding the Trump administration accountable.

I understand why he might think they can only do one or the other. After all, the GOP Congress allowed this corrupt administration to operate unchecked in order to advance its radical, far-right agenda of making the wealthy wealthier at the expense of hard-working American families; dismantling environmental protections; jeopardizing healthcare for millions; and rolling back civil rights protections for students, women, people of color, people with disabilities, and new Americans.

Meanwhile, Democrats are legislating on the issues the vast majority of Americans support, from getting big money out of politics to passing universal background checks. (You guessed it -- Katko opposed both!) And with your help, I’ll go to Congress to fight for struggling central and western New Yorkers by reducing prescription drugs prices, investing in a renewable energy economy, and protecting Social Security.

The truth is that Katko and his party are the ones out of step with what Americans want and need. And his hollow calls for bipartisanship do nothing more than allow him to declare himself the good guy and hope that we don’t notice the damage he’s doing in the meantime.

If you’re tired of listening to Katko label the policies that the majority of Americans support as “fringe” or “radical,” please me join calling on him and his Republican colleagues to put people over corporate profits and join Democrats in holding Trump accountable.

We, the American people, don’t have to choose between a Congress who makes policy to address our most pressing concerns like healthcare, the climate crisis, and economic stagnation and a Congress who exercises oversight of a corrupt and dangerous administration. We demand both. And, folks, the good news is, we Democrats can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Thank you for being on this team,

Dana
