In 2008, no one thought we could do it. After all, it had been 40 years since a U.S. Senator in Oregon had been defeated. And Senator Gordon Smith was well-liked and well-funded. And, I’ll admit, I had doubts myself.
 
But then something amazing happened.
 
You gave your time. You chipped in where you could. And together, we built the largest grassroots campaign in Oregon history.
 
 
Election night in 2008 was extraordinary, historic, and cathartic. We fought hard and you won eight tough Senate races across America, expanded our majority in the House, and elected President Obama.
 
Since then, we’ve taken on the special interests at every turn: Working to reverse Citizens United, standing up to big polluters, fighting for middle-class jobs, protecting the promise of Medicare and Social Security, and holding Wall Street and the big banks accountable.
 
That’s why the SuperPACs are coming after me; they don’t like how I champion our progressive values, and want to replace me with someone like Paul Ryan.
 
 
It’s been a humbling journey, fighting for you in the Senate. When I left small town Myrtle Creek, or became the first in my family to attend college, I never imagined I’d have this great honor. But the honor isn’t the title, it’s the opportunity to fight for the causes we believe in.

Dear Robert, We have an ambitious fundraising goal this month, so I thought I’d ask:  Would you mind making a $22.5 million contribution? Don’t worry, I’m not expecting you to say “yes.” Besides, that’s way, way more than any individual is allowed to contribute to a campaign. But, thanks to  Citizens United , some very wealthy conservative was able to write a $22.5 million check to Karl Rove’s attack ad factory. That’s more than we raised in the entire 2008 campaign! (And don’t bother asking who it was -- under the law, Rove isn’t required to disclose his new best friend’s name.) Robert, the rules have changed. And we have to be ready for the new landscape in 2014. So forget the $22.5 million --  but could you chip in $22.50? Historic Victory at Standing Rock Calls for Celebration and Vigilance For the last eight months, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has led a historic campaign against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), uniting hundreds of tribes, environmentalists, veterans and other activists inspired by their bold stand in defense of native treaty rights and the environment.   On Sunday, millions of people around the world celebrated news that the Army Corps of Engineers had rejected an easement to allow DAPL to go forward. This was an enormous victory for the movement and for ordinary people everywhere in the struggle against Big Oil and naked corporate greed. I congratulate and thank these courageous indigenous people and all others who rallied behind their cause, including the veteran activists who came to strengthen the camp in the days preceding the Army Corps’ ruling.
