Tax Reform
On Friday, the House-Senate Tax Reform Conference Committee reached a final deal on our historic tax reform package. My colleagues and I have put together a package that will ultimately deliver much-needed tax relief to our middle class families and boost our nation’s economy. This is our chance to say to those who haven’t seen a paycheck increase in decades – we hear you, and we see you. With this bill, we are helping single moms, like mine, by bolstering the Child Tax Credit and allowing more hardworking, everyday Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money. I am hopeful that this week we will have a bill on the President’s desk ready for signature, and in 2018, Americans will start to see the tangible benefits of this breakthrough agreement. National Defense Authorization Act
Last Tuesday, President Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY18 into law. The final NDAA looks out for our service members and allocates critical resources that will continue to strengthen our national security posture. Most notably, it provides our military personnel with a significant pay increase. It is great news when we can compensate our men and women in uniform for everything they do. 

I was also glad to see special emphasis on building up our missile defense programs, a crucial step to countering future global threats. And as someone who believes GITMO should remain operational in order to keep enemy combatants from returning to the battlefield, I was reassured to see the NDAA continues to keep these individuals from being transferred or released. All in all, Tuesday marked a good day for our military and a good day for our country.

Friend -- I wanted to make sure you saw the news: Today President Obama announced a common-sense policy change that will make our immigration system fairer and smarter. I'm proud to support it, and I hope you are, too. Under the administration's guidance, immigration courts are going to focus on deporting people who have been convicted of crimes or who pose a security risk. This means that the courts will focus less on "low-priority" cases -- like young people who were brought here as small children and know no other home, or veterans and military spouses. So the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice will be reviewing the current deportation caseload, clearing out low-priority cases, and making sure they don't get into the system in the first place -- keeping the focus on cases that will make our country safer. It's a smart, strategic change. And it will make a difference. But more comprehensive change requires Congress to act.

Dear Robert, When many people think of the  filibuster , they think of the 1939 film  Mr. Smith Goes to Washington . In this classic, Senator Smith talks ceaselessly on the Senate floor to stand up for the little guy against the special interests. It's an unusual and dramatic scene. Today, that scene has been turned upside down.  Senate Republicans routinely use the filibuster to block anything and everything they dislike -- no matter how uncontroversial or critical it is -- to protect special interests at the expense of the little guy. Thankfully, the Senate has an opportunity to fix the filibuster next week, and I -- along with Senators Jeff Merkley and Tom Udall -- plan to do it. When Confederates put flags on their trucks and intimidate our children up and down our streets. When Confederate flags wave through the neighborhoods of our children that are walking home from school. Where their dogs are barking at our children to harrass and terrorized them until  they cannot move and we as adults have to stand and tell them that everything is okay.
