Why I filibustered for gun violence prevention Friend --  I was the Congressman from Newtown, Connecticut when tragedy struck Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14th, 2012. As long as I live, I’ll never forget the scene at the firehouse when twenty-six families were told they would not be reunited with their children and loved ones.  For years, Congress has failed those families and the victims of gun violence all across the country.  That is why yesterday, starting at 11:21 a.m., I decided to stand on the Senate floor and talk for as long as I could about the need to prevent gun violence. Historic Victory at Standing Rock Calls for Celebration and Vigilance For the last eight months, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has led a historic campaign against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), uniting hundreds of tribes, environmentalists, veterans and other activists inspired by their bold stand in defense of native treaty rights and the environment.   On Sunday, millions of people around the world celebrated news that the Army Corps of Engineers had rejected an easement to allow DAPL to go forward. This was an enormous victory for the movement and for ordinary people everywhere in the struggle against Big Oil and naked corporate greed. I congratulate and thank these courageous indigenous people and all others who rallied behind their cause, including the veteran activists who came to strengthen the camp in the days preceding the Army Corps’ ruling. Chuck: Senator Marco Rubio has taken a U-turn

Robert, It's official: Senator Marco Rubio has taken a U-turn and decided that he will run for the Senate once again in 2016. Throughout this past year, Senator Rubio has said time and time again that he had no interest in working for Florida residents in the Senate any longer. He promised over and over that he was done with Congress and that he wouldn't return. I have to say it -- I was ready to say goodbye to Senator Rubio. And since his announcement yesterday, I'm more confident than ever. Senator Rubio may have just decided he wants to represent Florida again, but he's going to meet his match in my friend Patrick Murphy. Since he was elected in 2012, Patrick's dedication to serving the people of Florida has never wavered, and I truly believe that if he takes Florida, we'll turn the Senate blue in 2016. At the state level, Governor Rauner has refused to put together a budget to fully fund our neighborhood schools.
