Ted: President Obama just called out Rob Portman

President Obama just called out Rob Portman directly.

During a local Ohio TV interview, President Obama urged Sen. Portman to fulfill his constitutional responsibility and grant Judge Merrick Garland a fair hearing and an up or down vote -- and said the fact that Republicans like Portman are not calling for a hearing or a vote means they’re not doing their job.

I couldn't agree more with the president: It’s time for Portman and his Republican colleagues in the Senate to do their job.

Republicans like Portman are backing up Mitch McConnell and Ted Cruz and threatening to delay for over a year so President Obama can't fulfill his responsibility. It's a shame. It's an affront to our Constitution. And leaving the Supreme Court one justice short for over a year will have terrible consequences for our country.

That's why I need you to sign my petition calling on Rob Portman to do his job and confirm President Obama's nominee. Join me and the 30,227 strong telling Rob Portman to stop playing politics with the Constitution.

Rob Portman has a clear choice to make: He can look out for his party and D.C. special interests by holding back President Obama's nominee, or he can do his job for the people of Ohio.

I know what choice I'd make.

It's unbelievable that at such a pivotal time in our country's history, D.C. insiders would keep the Supreme Court one justice short for purely political interests. I sincerely hope that Rob Portman won't shirk his responsibilities. But as every D.C. insider's favorite senator, I don't have a lot of hope.

Dear Robert, What if there was a magic button that could overturn  Citizens United , get the word “SuperPAC” out of our national vocabulary, and drive shady money out of our political system forever? Wouldn’t you push the heck out of that button? Me, too. But there’s no such button. All we can do is fight as hard as we can to limit the influence of big money -- and one important step we can take is passing the DISCLOSE Act, a bill that would force special interest groups to tell us who’s funding their political activities. Chabot College is a rambling series of academic buildings situated on 94 acres in Hayward, California. It offers more than 100 associate degrees and certificates, an intercollegiate national championship-winning ultimate disc team, and parking for a couple thousand cars. It's also my alma mater. Chabot's a community college -- and in the early 1970s, it was all free, save for the effort you put into it and the price of used textbooks. As a student there, I went to school alongside Vietnam vets, moms, and middle-aged men, as well as a few thousand young people like me who needed time to sort out our lives and our options.
