Rand: I’m standing strong in the Senate

Dear Patriot:

The U.S. and Pakistani relationship has been a troubled one.

Though we consider them an ally in the fight on terrorism, their behavior would suggest they’re not really an ally at all.

While we give them billions of dollars in aid, they are assisting the Afghan Taliban through their military and intellgence apparatus.

They’ve made no effort to curb this behavior in recent years, even when it clearly threatens the safety of Americans.

Patriot, I think you'd agree the U.S. should halt arm sales to the government of Pakistan and I'm working hard in the Senate to do just that.

I think it’s about time we draw a line.

We cannot keep contributing to the economy and the military of a country that does not represent our best interests.

In addition to Pakistan's failure to prevent the funding of terrorism, it also has a deplorable human rights record.

Pakistan isolates and unjustly jails religious minorities and Christians all too often.

In fact, a Pakistani Christian Asa Bibi, was sentenced to death for his beliefs. Only after an international outcry did Pakistan commute Asa Bibi’s sentence.

Pakistan also currently holds Dr. Shakil Afridi in prison.

His crime? Assisting the United States in locating and killing Osama Bin Laden.

I think most Americans would agree that American military technology should not be so readily sold to a country who is contradicting American values at every turn and contributing large sums of money to terrorism around the world.

I’m standing strong in the Senate to halt U.S. Arm sales to Pakistan.
