My friends Barack and Michelle Obama will have been married 20 years exactly this Wednesday.

That's also the day that Barack will face off with Mitt Romney for the very first presidential debate of this election.

I suppose you can't plan everything -- even when you're president of the United States.

But there's something we can all do to help send them off into the last month of this election feeling good:

If my husband hadn't been president, I would have wanted to go as myself—a lawyer, an advocate. But I knew that if I went as the First Lady of the United States it would carry a message that would resound around the world: The United States is putting its leadership toward advancing the rights of women. Our volunteers pounded the pavement to talk to voters, our staff put in long hours and late nights, and we fought for every last vote.
