Rising tides threaten homes and communities in coastal regions. Catastrophic storms wreak havoc and kill thousands. Drought endangers food sources, leading to refugees and mass migration. Carbon pollution and dirty energy jeopardize the health and safety of everyone on our planet.
These are among the national security threats that climate change causes all over the world, Robert.
Our military has known about and planned for security threats caused by climate disruption for more than a decade. Yet still some members of our Republican-led Congress and the president have their heads in the sand, actually exacerbating the dangers ahead from a warming world.
When Donald Trump announced he was pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement, not only did he threaten our relationships with western allies, he put ideology ahead of the safety and best interests of the American people.
Climate disruption will cause people to fight for limited resources in smaller areas, and governments will have more challenges to maintaining order—just as we have seen with the drought in the Middle East that has led to much of the unrest in Syria and its neighbors.
Onward!
