Jennifer Petty: Save the Michigan Unions

Dear robert l., 

They really are already at it again. Led by Republicans, on Tuesday, Michigan’s state legislature enacted far-reaching legislation that could cripple hardworking Americans who belong to labor unions. 

That’s right, in Michigan, a state that was the center of the union movement.

And Republican Governor Rick Snyder has already signed the legislation. 


This “right to work” effort is what the Republican Party is all about. And like we did in Wisconsin last year, we have to get people on the ground in Michigan, so we can fight back for working Americans.

But we need your year-end support, so please donate today. 


This effort was led by Americans for Prosperity, which is funded by the billionaire Koch brothers – who want to crush middle-class Americans everywhere they can. 

So please, please be as generous as you can today, so we can fight back. You know they won’t stop in Michigan. They will try to roll this out in every state they can. We must be ready to fight back.

This important milestone was nearly a hundred years in the making, dating back to 1917. While we mark this occasion, let us also make clear:  We won’t wait another century to get the equal representation women deserve. robert, Congress just got back from their annual summer vacation -- but Mitch McConnell's Republican Party sure didn't take a single day off from their attacks on women and families.  They've come after Alison Lundergan Grimes with sexist attacks on her qualifications. They've shuffled their election dates in Georgia to try to come up with a less absurd challenger to Michelle Nunn. It's been a crazy couple months, but we can't dwell on the negative -- because  we've had an amazing response from all of you in the last several weeks!   Black Independent Party, Since Senator Joe Manchin announced he’d vote against critical voting rights legislation AND oppose ending the filibuster, Justice Democrats have spoken out in frustration.  Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman haven’t held anything back. Speaking on Manchin’s opposition to the For The People Act, to protect our elections and stop the racist Republican voter suppression laws in states across the country, Jamaal said,  “Joe Manchin has become the new Mitch McConnell...Manchin is doing everything in his power to stop democracy and to stop our work for the people.”  It’s blunt, but it’s true. Dear friend, Yesterday, I visited Jackson Park, the future home of the Obama Presidential Center, and surprised some of the Center’s future neighbors.  Take a look. We can’t wait to bring this Center to the South Side. For Michelle and me, this project is about more than building a gathering space and museum—it’s an opportunity to bring jobs, investment, and economic opportunity to a neighborhood that’s given us so much.  But we also know that to be successful, this project needs to not just be for the community, it must be built in partnership with the community.    That’s why, this week, I spent time with local business owners at South Shore Brew coffee shop and got to hear from them directly about their hopes for the Center.  I also stopped by the Wolfpack youth football team’s practice and talked to some of the kids who use Jackson Park every day.   Black Independent Party, it seems like House Democrats are fighting harder to protect themselves from the basic tenets of democracy than they are to defeating Republicans. It’s ridiculous.. The 4th most powerful Democrat in the House, Hakeem Jeffries, and one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress, Josh Gottheimer, have launched “Team Blue PAC” — a PAC specifically designed to spend big money against progressive primary challengers like Justice Democrats. Jeffries and Gottheimer claim they are doing this on behalf of Democratic Party leadership. Wall Street, war hawks, Big Pharma, and Big Oil are spending resources to stop the next Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib from getting to Congress. Jeanne: a woman’s constitutional right to make her own health care decisions

Robert – In less than three months, the Supreme Court will hear a case that could undermine  Roe v. Wade  and set women’s health back decades. If the Court rules the wrong way, it could force the only clinic in west Texas to close and open the floodgates for even more extreme anti-abortion regulations designed to keep women from accessing a legal medical procedure. Republicans have been chipping away at a woman’s constitutional right to make her own health care decisions for YEARS, but this case is the biggest threat to the right to choose we’ve ever faced.  We need to speak out together  now , before the Supreme Court guts abortion rights.
