Pasco Policing Reporters Pick Up Pulitzer Prize

This year’s Pulitzer Prize winners had some familiar names for the communications team at IJ. Kathleen McGrory and Neil Bedi at the Tampa Bay Times won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Local Reporting for their in-depth investigation of Pasco County, Florida’s “predictive policing” program, in which police create a list of people they think likely to commit crimes and then relentlessly harass them and their families. Following the Times’ reporting, IJ’s attorneys hit the ground and filed a class action lawsuit challenging the program on behalf of three families profiled by McGrory and Bedi.

Black Independent Party, When asked recently about passing H.R. 1/S. 1, the historic voting rights legislation in Congress (also known as the For The People Act), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said this: “I would say the deadline for S. 1 is …   probably by August   or so. We’re consulting with experts. When is the latest that S. 1 can undo some of the despicable and frankly racist changes that some of these Republican legislatures have made?” That’s not only a deadline for passing critical voting protections for the entire country; it’s a deadline for getting rid of the filibuster   — because we can’t pass S. 1 through the Senate without doing away with the archaic, racist filibuster.   Robert, The United States has the worst mortality rate in the modern world, and Black women are three to four times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy. This Black History Month, I am again reminded of how racism and sexism have continued to dominate the healthcare system.  commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. T he oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.   Dating back to 1865, it was on  June 19 th  that the Union soldiers, led by  Major General Gordon Granger , landed at  Galveston, Texas  with news that the war had ended and that the  enslaved were now free . Note that this was  two and a half years  after  President Lincoln’s  Emancipation Proclamation  - which had  become official January 1, 1863 . The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new  Executive Order . However, with the  surrender of General Lee in April of 1865 , and the  arrival of General Granger’s regiment,  the  forces  were finally strong enough to  influence  and  overcome the resistance. What is 4th of July to Fort Smith Arkansas.

 When we still have Confederate monuments downtown. Where they have annual bike rallies in which they sell Confederate flags. When Confederates put flags on their trucks and intimidate our children up and down our streets. When Confederate flags wave through the neighborhoods of our children that are walking home from school. Where their dogs are barking at our children to harrass and terrorized them until they cannot move and we as adults have to stand and tell them that everything is okay. What is 4th of July to Fort Smith Arkansas. When we have a black mayor who does nothing for his own race and will celebrate America's Independence and ignore his own Freedom day that Juneteenth represents. Business as usual in our city changes when we take deliberate actions to change the status quo. The city’s spending panel — which hands out millions upon millions of dollars to government contractors every week — had an opportunity today to invest in the diversity, equity and inclusion that will drive better outcomes for our city. Instead, in a vote of 4-1, my vote being the only dissenting one, the Board of Estimates rejected the opportunity. For four months, I have pushed the administration to reach for equity before waiving minority- and women-owned business participation on a lucrative, longstanding contract with Motorola to ensure ongoing telecommunication between our emergency responders was not disrupted. As city leaders, we have pledged to our residents time and time again that we will improve the city’s patterns and practices related to government contracting.
