Mia: personal touch

Mia's Message

This is a story I tell frequently in speeches to illustrate what I call "the power of personal touch."

One day a little girl attended a San Diego Padres baseball game with her father. More than anything, she wanted to catch a fly ball. She was so animated that those in the stands paid more attention to her than to the action on the field.

After a little while, the girl’s father suggested that they move to the next section over, where no one else was sitting. Shortly after relocating, a fly ball was hit right into the seats where they had just been sitting.

A young man caught the ball. Without hesitation, and with the stadium's JumboTron fixed on him, he ran over to the little girl and handed her the ball. The excited little girl blew him a kiss as he walked away.

After the game, the girl’s father took her down to the dugout in hopes that one of the players would sign the treasured baseball. As they waited for players to reemerge onto the field, the little girl noticed the young man who had generously given her the baseball. Rather than have the ball autographed by one of the players, she instead asked the young man to sign the ball, which he did with a smile.

That little girl is now a grown woman with three kids of her own. And on her mantle sits a baseball that many years prior was signed by a young man who she didn't really know—and never got to know—yet he impacted her life in a meaningful way by doing something kind for her. That’s the power of personal touch.
